Every slice
has a cause

Edition Two

"The slice did not need to be corrected. It needed to be traced back to its source."

Root

Every slice has a cause. Not a mystery. A cause.

The ball goes right because the path that delivered it came from outside the line. That path came from somewhere higher up. And that somewhere is usually in position before the swing has even started.

The setup builds the swing before the first movement happens. Get the setup right and the swing has somewhere honest to go. Get it wrong and the swing is compensating from the moment it begins.

Most golfers fix the compensation. Nobody goes looking for what created it.

Ring

I had a slice with my driver for longer than I want to admit.

I knew what was causing it. I had watched it enough times to know exactly where the fault was living — in my trail arm, in the backswing, in the position that was sending the club over the top on the way down.

Outside-in. Left-to-right spin. The same result every time.

So I stopped trying to fix the shot and started looking at what was happening before the shot. Specifically — where my trail arm was at address. What it was pointing at. What that produced when the swing began.

What I found was simple. Almost embarrassingly simple.

One position. One awareness. And from that moment everything that followed — the fold of the trail arm, the width in the backswing, the control of the clubface, the positions I could now reach that I could not reach before — all of it became available.

The slice did not need to be corrected. It needed to be traced back to its source. When I found the source, the slice disappeared on its own.

That is the methodology in one story.

Branch

Before the next round you play, stand at address with your driver and ask yourself one question.

Where is my trail arm pointing right now?

Not during the swing. Not at the top. At address. Before anything moves.

The answer tells you something about what is coming. It told me everything.

If something feels off — if the shot that keeps showing up feels like it has no explanation — go back further than the swing. Go back to the moment before it began.

That is where the answer usually lives.

If you want a second pair of eyes on what yours is doing — DM the word SWING. That is exactly what the Diagnostic Session is for.

The Acorn Question

Is there a shot shape that keeps showing up in your game that you have accepted as just the way it is?

Small things. The right things. 🌱
